"body_markdown": "I Spent Weeks Debugging My AI Agent. Turns Out, It Just Needed a How-To Guide.\nA beginner-friendly deep dive into Agent Skills, explaining what they are, why the whole industry adopted them, and how to start using them today.\nUpdated\nJuly 16, 2026\n•\n8\nmin read\n•\nView as Markdown\nP\nPulkit Kushwaha\nAI engineer. Been in this rabbit hole since before it was cool. I started with the math of deep learning when in college, now I ship enterprise-grade AI systems for a living.\nThe obsession never changed, just the scale. Writing here so you don't have to learn everything the hard way.\nAgent Skills: The Missing Piece That Finally Makes AI Agents Reliable\nI build enterprise AI systems for a living and recently went deep into the agentic AI space. This one cost me weeks of frustration before I found the fix, so I wrote it down.\nIf you've been building with AI agents, you've probably hit this wall.\nYou set up the agent, give it a clear task, and it just gets it wrong. It uses the wrong library, the wrong file path, or the wrong format. You fix it, run it again, and it finds a new way to fail.\nThe cycle is exhausting, and the worst part is that you cannot always tell whether the model is bad or whether you're doing something wrong.\nSpoiler: you probably were not doing anything wrong.\nThere was a gap baked into how agents work, and for a long time nobody had a clean fix for it.\nThat fix now exists. It is called\nAgent Skills\n, and it is quietly becoming the standard across the AI industry.\nFirst, Let's Talk About the Problem\nAI models are trained on general knowledge consisting of vast amounts of text, code, and documentation. However, that training happened in a controlled environment that is completely separate from your setup.\nYour environment has its own rules:\nWhich Python libraries are actually installed?\nWhich versions of those libraries are available?\nWhere should output files be saved?\nWhat is the correct format for a specific file type?\nThe model does not know any of this.\nSo it guesses.\nAnd guesses, even educated ones, lead to that painful loop:\ntry → fail → fix → try again\nThis is not a flaw in the model's intelligence. It is a structural gap. The model knows a lot about the world in general, but it knows nothing about your world specifically.\nEnter Agent Skills\nOn October 16, 2025, Anthropic introduced a concept designed to bridge exactly that gap:\nAgent Skills\n.\nThe idea is almost disarmingly simple.\nBefore an agent does anything, it reads a how-to guide for your specific environment. That guide is called a\nSkill\n.\nAs Anthropic describes it:\n\"Building a skill for an agent is like putting together an onboarding guide for a new hire.\"\nA new hire might be brilliant, but on day one they still need to know where things are, which tools the team uses, and how the company operates.\nA Skill is exactly that onboarding document, written for an AI agent.\nWhat a Skill Actually Looks Like\nA Skill is simply a folder on your filesystem containing a file named\nSKILL.md\n.\nThat is it. Just a Markdown file.\nExample Structure\nskills/\n└── report-generator/\n └── SKILL.md\nExample\nSKILL.md\n---\nname: report-generator\ndescription: Use this skill when the user asks to generate a weekly report in .docx format.\n---\n\n## How to Generate Reports\n\nUse the `python-docx` library. Version 1.1.2 is installed.\n\nSave all output files to:\n\n/home/user/outputs/reports/\n\nAlways include a timestamp in the filename:\n\nreport_YYYY-MM-DD.docx\n\nCompany logo location:\n\n/assets/logo.png\n\n## Common Pitfalls\n\nDo not use `docx2pdf`. It is not installed in this environment.\n\nAlways save files to the `/outputs/` folder rather than the desktop.\nNo complex configuration is required.\nNo code is required.\nJust structured knowledge written in plain English.\nHow the Agent Uses It: Progressive Disclosure\nAgents do not load every skill into memory all the time because that would be slow and wasteful.\nInstead, Anthropic designed Skills around\nprogressive disclosure\n, which follows the same idea as a manual that begins with a table of contents, then moves into chapters, and finally reaches a detailed appendix.\nHere is how it works:\nAt startup\n, the agent loads only the name and description of every available Skill. This requires very few tokens.\nWhen you send a message\n, the agent checks whether any Skill description matches the task.\nIf a match is found\n, the agent loads the full\nSKILL.md\nfile and uses it to guide its work.\nDozens of Skills can be installed with virtually no performance penalty.\nThe agent reads only what it needs, exactly when it needs it.\nWhy This Matters More Than You Think\nTwo months after launch, on December 18, 2025, Anthropic published the Agent Skills specification as an open standard. The reference SDK is available through Agent Skills resources and tooling.\nThe industry reaction was immediate.\nAccording to Anthropic Product Manager Mahesh Murag:\n\"Microsoft has already adopted Agent Skills within VS Code and GitHub; so have popular coding agents like Cursor, Goose, Amp, OpenCode, and more.\"\nAs of June 2026, Copilot Studio officially supports the same format, including the same\nSKILL.md\nstructure, naming conventions, and progressive disclosure approach.\nA Skill written for Claude Code today can work in Copilot Studio tomorrow.\nThe same file.\nNo conversion.\nNo rewrite.\nBefore this, every tool had its own format. Cursor had\n.cursorrules\n, Claude Code had a different system, and Copilot had separate instruction files.\nNone of those formats traveled well across platforms.\nThat fragmentation is now disappearing.\nMore than 30 tools, including Gemini CLI, AWS Kiro, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Copilot Studio, can work with the same\nSKILL.md\nformat.\nThat almost never happens in technology.\nSkills vs. Prompts: What's the Difference?\nIf you already write detailed system prompts, you might wonder why Skills are necessary.\nThat is a fair question.\nPrompts Live in Code\nPrompts typically live inside your application code.\nSkills live on your filesystem.\nWhen something changes, such as a library version or a file path, you update one Skill file rather than searching through an entire codebase.\nSkills Are Composable\nA finance-report agent and a customer-email agent can both use the same\ncompany-formatting\nSkill.\nWrite it once.\nUse it everywhere.\nSkills Are Portable\nIf you switch from Claude Code to Copilot Studio, your Skills move with you.\nYour prompts usually do not.\nSkills Scale Across Teams\nYou can store a Skills library in version control and share it across your organization.\nAs a result, every agent behaves consistently rather than each developer maintaining separate instructions.\nHow to Get Started\nIn Claude (claude.ai)\nOpen\nSettings → Skills\nClick\nCreate Skill\nDescribe what you want, and Claude helps build it\nAlternatively, upload a folder containing your own\nSKILL.md\nAnthropic also provides a partner directory with ready-made Skills from companies such as Atlassian, Figma, Canva, Notion, Stripe, and Zapier.\nIn Claude Code\n# Install from the marketplace\nclaude skills install anthropics/skills/docx\n\n# Create your own skill\nmkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/my-skill\n\n# Place your SKILL.md file inside the folder\nIn Copilot Studio\nGo to the\nSkills\ntab within the agent builder.\nCreate a Skill from scratch or upload an existing\nSKILL.md\n.\nSame file.\nDifferent platform.\nThat is the entire point.\nThe Bigger Picture\nAgent Skills is not just a useful feature.\nIts adoption pattern reveals something important about where the industry is heading.\nWhen Anthropic released MCP as an open standard, it became a common way for agents to connect with external tools.\nAgent Skills appears to be following a similar path, not because anyone mandated it, but because it is simple enough and useful enough that competitors adopted it voluntarily.\nAs Gartner analyst Arun Chandrasekaran put it:\n\"The industry is now moving beyond the models into, 'Hey, what can the models do on my behalf? How can the models orchestrate workflows?'\"\nThe AI race is no longer just about whose model is the smartest.\nIt is increasingly about who builds the infrastructure that every model relies on.\nAgent Skills is quietly becoming part of that infrastructure.\nTL;DR\nThe Problem\nAgents guess environment-specific details, and those guesses lead to errors.\nThe Solution\nAgent Skills provide a Markdown-based how-to guide that agents read before taking action.\nHow It Works\nProgressive disclosure allows agents to load lightweight metadata at startup and retrieve full instructions only when needed.\nWhy It Matters\nAgent Skills launched in October 2025, became an open standard in December 2025, and are now supported by dozens of tools, including Copilot Studio, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI.\nHow to Start\nCreate a\nSKILL.md\nfile, document your environment's rules, and place it in your Skills directory.\nReferences\nAnthropic Engineering Blog —\nEquipping Agents for the Real World with Agent Skills\nVentureBeat —\nAnthropic Launches Enterprise Agent Skills and Opens the Standard\nThe New Stack —\nAgent Skills: Anthropic's Next Bid to Define AI Standards\nAI Business —\nAnthropic Launches Skills Open Standard for Claude\nMicrosoft GitHub Blog —\nModern MCS Agent Skills: Here's How They Work\nAbout the Author\nI'm an AI Engineer building enterprise AI systems and documenting what works, what breaks, and what I've learned along the way.\nIf you're interested in AI agents, GenAI, RAG systems, and practical AI engineering, consider following for future articles.\n#\nai\n#\nai-agents\n#\nagent-skills\n#\ncopilotstudio\n#\nclaude\n#\nllm\n#\nmachine-learning\n5\nviews",
