"title": "JavaScript Event Loop Series: Building the Event Loop Mental Model from Experiments - DEV Community",
"body_markdown": "I wrote this series because JavaScript has many \"asynchronous\" mechanisms (\nawait\n,\nsetTimeout\n,\nPromise\n,\nrequestAnimationFrame\n) that look similar but behave very differently.\nAt first, I assumed they were interchangeable but that assumption quickly broke when I started debugging:\nWhy\nsetTimeout(..., 0)\ndoesn’t \"run immediately\"\nWhy\nawait\npauses a function but doesn’t freeze the page\nWhy DOM updates sometimes don’t show up when you expect\nWhy some \"async\" code still blocks rendering\nThese behaviours only make sense with the right mental model. This series builds that model by experimenting with small code snippets.\nThe core idea is simple:\nJavaScript runs to completion inside a task, and nothing interrupts it.\nFrom there, we layer in:\nmacrotasks\n(what a task actually is),\nmicrotasks\n(why Promises run first),\nasync\n/\nawait\n(pausing a function without pausing JavaScript),\nrendering\n(why the screen doesn’t update mid-turn),\nrequestAnimationFrame\n(the missing pre-render scheduling layer), and finally,\nwhat this means for\nreal UI code\n.\nWho this is for\nThis series is for you if you’ve ever felt that JavaScript async behavior is:\npredictable in practice, but unclear in theory\n\"working\" … until it suddenly doesn’t\nfull of rules you remember, but don’t fully understand\nYou don’t need prior knowledge of the event loop. The goal is to build a mental model you can use to reason about behavior — not just memorize it.\nHow to read this series\nEach article builds on the previous one. You\ncan\njump around, but the payoff is highest if you go in order.\nIf you want the\ncore mental model quickly\n: read Articles 1–3\nIf you care about\nrendering and UI behavior\n: Articles 5–7 connect the model to what you see on screen\nIf you just want answers: each article is self-contained, but the full model only emerges across the series\nYou can also read this series on my\nwebsite\n(recommended for the best reading experience).\nThe articles\nHere’s how the model unfolds:\n1) The JavaScript Runtime: Fixing the Mental Model\nWhy doesn’t\nsetTimeout\ninterrupt your code? This article breaks the illusion: JavaScript runs synchronously, and async APIs don’t interrupt. Instead, they schedule.\nRead it\nhere\n.\n2) Macrotasks: What a Task Actually Is\nIf nothing can interrupt JavaScript, when does anything else run? This article reframes tasks as entry points into execution, not chunks of work.\nRead it\nhere\n3) Microtasks: Why Promises Run First\nWhy do Promises always run before\nsetTimeout\n? This article reveals microtasks as mandatory continuations that must run before JavaScript moves on.\nRead it\nhere\n4)\nasync\n/\nawait\n: Pausing Functions Without Pausing the World\nDoes\nawait\npause your program or just your function? This article shows how\nawait\nactually works.\nRead it\nhere\n.\n5) Rendering Is a Browser Decision, Not a JavaScript One\nYou updated the DOM. So why didn’t the screen change? This article explains why rendering is not triggered by JavaScript, but gated by it.\nRead it\nhere\n.\n6)\nrequestAnimationFrame\n: The Missing Scheduling Layer\nIf rendering only happens at certain moments, how do you run code at the right time? This article introduces\nrequestAnimationFrame\nas the missing scheduling layer.\nRead it\nhere\n.\n7) The Scheduling Boundaries Behind Responsive UI\nWhy do UIs freeze, skip updates, or feel laggy? This article connects the event loop to real-world UI behavior and shows how to work with the browser, not against it.\nRead it\nhere\nThe mental model\nThis is the model everything in this series builds toward:\nThe browser (runtime) starts a macrotask\nJavaScript runs synchronously until the call stack is empty\nThe runtime drains all microtasks\nThe browser runs any\nrequestAnimationFrame\ncallbacks\nMicrotasks drain again (if any were queued during\nrequestAnimationFrame\n)\nOnly then can rendering happen\nContinue the Conversation\nThis series was originally written and is maintained on my\nwebsite\n. If you prefer a single place with all updates and future articles, you can follow along there.\nIf you want to discuss edge cases, counterexamples, or how this interacts with real applications, I’m always happy to chat.\nMy personal website is\nhttps://marshateo.com\n.",
