"body_markdown": "A normal neural network treats each input mostly as a fixed snapshot.\nBut many problems are not snapshots.\nText, speech, and time-series data depend on order.\nThat is why RNNs exist.\nCore Idea\nA Recurrent Neural Network is designed for sequential data.\nIt does not only look at the current input.\nIt also carries information from previous steps.\nThat carried information is called the hidden state.\nSo an RNN can process a sequence one step at a time while keeping memory of what came before.\nThe Key Structure\nA simple RNN flow looks like this:\nPrevious Hidden State + Current Input → New Hidden State → Output\nMore compactly:\nRNN = current input + previous state\nAt each time step:\nh_t = f(x_t, h_{t-1})\nWhere:\nx_t = input at the current time step\nh_{t-1} = previous hidden state\nh_t = updated hidden state\nThis recurrence is the core mechanism.\nImplementation View\nAt a high level, an RNN processes a sequence like this:\ninitialize hidden state\n\nfor each time step in the sequence:\n read current input\n\n combine it with previous hidden state\n\n update hidden state\n\n optionally produce output\n\nreturn final output or all outputs\nEnter fullscreen mode\nExit fullscreen mode\nThis is why RNNs are useful for ordered data.\nThe model can carry context forward.\nIt does not restart from zero at every step.\nConcrete Example\nImagine a sentence:\nI love machine learning\nA basic feedforward network may process words as independent inputs.\nBut an RNN reads them in order.\nStep 1:\nI\nStep 2:\nI love\nStep 3:\nI love machine\nStep 4:\nI love machine learning\nAt each step, the hidden state carries previous context.\nThat is how the model remembers earlier words while reading later ones.\nStandard Neural Network vs RNN\nThis comparison makes the difference clear.\nStandard neural network:\nprocesses fixed-size input\nhas no built-in memory across time\nworks well for static feature vectors\ndoes not naturally model order\nRNN:\nprocesses sequences step by step\ncarries hidden state forward\nmodels temporal or ordered dependence\nfits text, speech, and time-series tasks\nThe key difference is state.\nA standard network transforms input.\nAn RNN transforms input while remembering previous context.\nWhy Hidden State Matters\nThe hidden state is the memory of the RNN.\nIt is not memory in the human sense.\nIt is a vector that summarizes previous information.\nAt each step, the hidden state is updated.\nThat updated state influences the next step.\nThis lets the model capture patterns like:\nword order\ntemporal trends\nrepeated signals\ndependency across earlier and later inputs\nWithout hidden state, the sequence becomes just a list of disconnected inputs.\nWhy Deep RNNs Exist\nA basic RNN can model sequences.\nBut some patterns are more complex.\nA Deep RNN stacks recurrent layers.\nThat allows the model to build richer sequence representations.\nBasic RNN:\none recurrent layer\nsimpler sequence modeling\neasier to understand\nlimited representational depth\nDeep RNN:\nmultiple recurrent layers\nmore expressive sequence modeling\ncan capture more complex temporal patterns\nharder to train\nSo Deep RNNs extend the same idea.\nThey do not replace recurrence.\nThey deepen it.\nWhere RNNs Fit in Deep Learning\nRNNs became important because different data types need different architectures.\nCNNs work well for images because images have spatial structure.\nRNNs work well for sequences because sequences have order.\nCNN:\nlocal spatial patterns\nimage-centered tasks\nconvolution kernels\nRNN:\ntemporal or sequential patterns\ntext, speech, time series\nrecurrent hidden state\nThis is why RNNs became one of the major deep learning architectures.\nThey match the structure of sequential data.\nPractical Limits\nRNNs are powerful, but they have limits.\nLong sequences are hard.\nInformation from early steps can weaken over time.\nTraining can become unstable because gradients must pass through many time steps.\nThis is one reason later architectures became important.\nAttention mechanisms and Transformers changed the landscape by making long-range relationships easier to model.\nBut RNNs remain the best starting point for understanding sequence modeling.\nRecommended Learning Order\nIf RNNs feel abstract, learn them in this order:\nNeural Network\nRecurrent Neural Network\nHidden State\nDeep RNN\nCNN vs RNN comparison\nAttention Mechanism\nTransformer\nThis order works because you first understand normal neural networks.\nThen you see what changes when order matters.\nThen you understand why modern sequence models moved beyond basic recurrence.\nTakeaway\nAn RNN is a neural network designed for sequences.\nThe shortest version is:\nRNN = current input + previous hidden state\nIt reads data step by step.\nIt carries context forward.\nIt uses that context to make better predictions on ordered data.\nIf you remember one idea, remember this:\nRNNs make neural networks sequence-aware by passing hidden state from one time step to the next.\nDiscussion\nWhen learning sequence models, do you find it easier to start from RNNs first, or jump directly to Attention and Transformers?\nOriginally published at zeromathai.com.\nOriginal
