"title": "How Knowledge-Based AI Works — From Rules to Inference - DEV Community",
"body_markdown": "Before AI learned from massive datasets, many systems worked with explicit knowledge.\nFacts.\nRules.\nInference.\nThat is the core of Knowledge-Based AI.\nCore Idea\nKnowledge-Based AI stores knowledge in a structured form.\nThen it uses rules to derive new conclusions.\nThe system does not “learn” from data in the modern deep learning sense.\nIt reasons over what it already knows.\nThat makes the structure very different from machine learning.\nThe Key Structure\nA simple Knowledge-Based AI system looks like this:\nKnowledge Base → Rules → Inference Engine → Conclusion\nOr more compact:\nKnowledge-Based AI = Facts + Rules + Inference\nThe knowledge base stores information.\nThe rule system defines how conclusions can be derived.\nThe inference engine applies those rules.\nImplementation View\nAt a high level, a rule-based system works like this:\nstore known facts\n\nstore IF-THEN rules\n\ncompare facts with rule conditions\n\napply matching rules\n\ngenerate new facts or conclusions\n\nrepeat until no useful rule applies\nEnter fullscreen mode\nExit fullscreen mode\nThis is why Knowledge-Based AI is easy to inspect.\nYou can often trace exactly which rule produced which conclusion.\nThat transparency is one of its biggest strengths.\nConcrete Example\nImagine a simple medical expert system.\nIt may store facts like:\npatient has fever\npatient has cough\npatient has fatigue\nAnd rules like:\nIF fever AND cough THEN possible infection\nIF possible infection AND fatigue THEN recommend further test\nThe system does not train on millions of examples.\nIt applies explicit rules.\nThat makes the reasoning path easier to explain.\nRule-Based AI vs Machine Learning\nThis comparison is important.\nRule-Based AI:\nuses explicit facts and rules\ndepends on human-designed knowledge\nis easier to explain\nstruggles when rules become too many or too brittle\nMachine Learning:\nlearns patterns from data\nimproves through training\nhandles noisy and complex data better\ncan be harder to interpret\nSo the difference is not just old AI vs modern AI.\nIt is symbolic reasoning vs data-driven learning.\nBoth solve problems in different ways.\nForward Chaining vs Backward Chaining\nEven with the same rules, inference can move in different directions.\nForward chaining starts from known facts.\nIt applies rules until it reaches conclusions.\nBackward chaining starts from a goal.\nIt works backward to check whether the needed conditions are true.\nForward chaining:\ndata-driven\nuseful when you want to discover what follows from known facts\nstarts with available evidence\nBackward chaining:\ngoal-driven\nuseful when you want to prove or verify a target conclusion\nstarts with the question\nThe difference is simple:\nForward chaining asks:\n“What can I conclude from what I know?”\nBackward chaining asks:\n“What must be true for this goal to hold?”\nWhy Inference Engines Matter\nThe inference engine is the part that makes the system active.\nA knowledge base alone only stores information.\nRules alone only define possible logic.\nThe inference engine applies the rules to produce conclusions.\nThat is why it is the execution layer of Knowledge-Based AI.\nWithout inference, the system is just a database.\nWith inference, it becomes a reasoning system.\nWhy Expert Systems Were Important\nExpert systems are one of the clearest applications of Knowledge-Based AI.\nThey encode domain knowledge from human experts.\nThen they use rules to make recommendations or decisions.\nExamples include:\nmedical diagnosis support\ntroubleshooting systems\nconfiguration systems\nrule-based decision support\nTheir biggest strength is explainability.\nTheir biggest weakness is maintenance.\nAs the domain grows, the rule base can become difficult to manage.\nLogical Extensions\nKnowledge-Based AI also connects to formal reasoning.\nLogic programming, such as PROLOG, represents knowledge as logical relations.\nTheorem proving uses formal logic to verify statements.\nCommonsense reasoning tries to represent everyday assumptions that humans usually take for granted.\nThese extensions show the same basic idea:\nRepresent knowledge explicitly.\nThen reason over it.\nRecommended Learning Order\nIf Knowledge-Based AI feels broad, learn it in this order:\nKnowledge Base\nRule-Based System\nInference Engine\nForward Chaining\nBackward Chaining\nExpert System\nLogic Programming\nTheorem Proving\nCommonsense Reasoning\nThis order works because you first understand storage.\nThen rules.\nThen inference.\nThen practical and logical extensions.\nTakeaway\nKnowledge-Based AI is built on explicit knowledge and reasoning.\nThe shortest version is:\nKnowledge-Based AI = facts + rules + inference\nIt is not mainly about learning from data.\nIt is about using stored knowledge to reach conclusions.\nIf you remember one idea, remember this:\nA knowledge-based system becomes intelligent when stored rules can generate new conclusions from known facts.\nDiscussion\nWhen building AI systems, do you prefer transparent rule-based reasoning, or flexible data-driven learning?\nOriginally published at zeromathai.com.\nOriginal article:\nhttps://zeromathai.com/en/knowledge-based-ai-hub-en/\nGitHub
