"body_markdown": "Simplifying K-Means Clustering: A Beginner's Guide to Unsupervised Learning\nPublished\nJanuary 9, 2026\n•\n4\nmin read\n•\nView as Markdown\nM\nMuhammad Fahad Bashir\nMachine Learning, Artificial Intelligence\nPart of series\nUnsupervised Learning\nThis is another article in our\nUnsupervised Learning series\n. Today, we’ll explore one of the\nmost popular and intuitive algorithms\nused in unsupervised learning —\nK-Means Clustering\n.\nBefore jumping into K-Means, let’s quickly recall what\nunsupervised learning\nmeans.\nIn unsupervised learning, we do not have labels or a target column. The data is raw and unorganized. Our goal is to discover hidden patterns, group similar data points, and bring structure to the data.\nOne of the most common ways to do this is through\nclustering\n, and\nK-Means\nis the most widely used clustering algorithm.\nWhat is K-Means Clustering?\nK-Means clustering\nis an\nunsupervised learning algorithm\nthat groups\nunlabeled data points into K clusters\nbased on similarity.\nHere:\nK\nrepresents the\nnumber of clusters\n(groups)\nEach cluster contains\nsimilar data points\nData points in\ndifferent clusters are as different as possible\nExample intuition\n: If you have customer sales data and choose\nK = 3\n, the algorithm will divide customers into\n3 distinct groups\nbased on their behavior or purchase patterns.\n“K-Means” & the Idea?\nK\n→ Number of clusters you want\nMeans\n→ Each cluster is represented by the\nmean (average)\nof its data points, called the\ncentroid\nSo, K-Means works by:\nGrouping data points around\nK centroids\nsuch that each point is closest to its assigned centroid.\nThe main objective of K-Means is to:\nMinimize the total distance between each data point and its assigned cluster centroid\nThis distance is usually calculated using\nEuclidean Distance\n.which measures how far two points are from each other in space — similar to measuring distance using a ruler.\nHow K-Means Algorithm Works (Step-by-Step)\nK-Means is an\niterative, centroid-based algorithm\n. It works in the following steps:\nStep 1: Choose the Number of Clusters (K)\n: You decide how many groups you want your data to be divided into. For example: K = 2 → 2 cluster or k=3 → 3 clusters.\nStep 2: Initialize Centroids\n: The algorithm randomly selects K points from the dataset as the initial cluster centroids.\nStep 3: Assign Data Points to Nearest Centroid:\nEach data point is assigned to the cluster whose centroid is\nclosest\n, based on Euclidean distance.\nStep 4: Update Centroids:\nFor each cluster, the centroid is recalculated by taking the\nmean of all points\nin that cluster.\nStep 5: Repeat (Iterative Process):\nSteps 3 and 4 are repeated until:\nCentroids no longer change, or\nA maximum number of iterations is reached\nAt this point, the algorithm\nconverges\nand final clusters are formed.\nChoosing the Right Value of K (Elbow Method)\n- Choosing the correct number of clusters is very important for meaningful results.\nThe\nElbow Method\nis a graphical technique used to find the optimal value of K.\nWhy Use K-Means Clustering?\nK-Means is widely used because it is:\nSimple to understand\nEasy to implement\nEfficient for large datasets\nFast and scalable\nCommon Applications of K-Means\n1. Customer Segmentation:\nBusinesses divide customers into groups based on different behaviours. This helps in targeted marketing and personalized recommendations.\n2. Document Clustering:\nIn NLP, K-Means groups similar documents together, such as News categorization, Topic discovery, and Recommendation systems\n3. Image Segmentation & Compressio\nn: K-Means groups similar pixels together to: Reduce image size (compression)and Identify boundaries in medical or computer vision images\n4. Anomaly Detection:\nData points far away from any cluster may represent fraud, errors and outliers\n5.\nOrganizing Large Datasets\n: K-Means helps structure raw, unorganized data into meaningful groups, making analysis easier.\nPractical Mini Example : K-Means on Iris Dataset (Unsupervised)\nWe’ll use the\nIris dataset\n(real-world, built into scikit-learn). Even though it has labels,\nwe will NOT use them\n— because K-Means is\nunsupervised\n.\n# import librares & load dataset\nfrom\nsklearn.datasets\nimport\nload_iris\nfrom\nsklearn.cluster\nimport\nKMeans\nimport\nmatplotlib.pyplot\nas\nplt\n\niris = load_iris()\nX = iris.data\n# unlabeled features\n# selecting features\n# Use petal length and petal width (features 2 and 3)\nX_selected = X[:,\n2\n:\n4\n]\n# apply k-means\nkmeans = KMeans(n_clusters=\n3\n, random_state=\n42\n)\nlabels = kmeans.fit_predict(X_selected)\ncentroids = kmeans.cluster_centers_\n# visualizing clusters\nplt.figure(figsize=(\n8\n,\n6\n))\n\nplt.scatter(\n X_selected[:,\n0\n],\n X_selected[:,\n1\n],\n c=labels,\n alpha=\n0.7\n)\n\nplt.scatter(\n centroids[:,\n0\n],\n centroids[:,\n1\n],\n marker=\n'X'\n,\n s=\n250\n)\n\nplt.xlabel(\n\"Petal Length\"\n)\nplt.ylabel(\n\"Petal Width\"\n)\nplt.title(\n\"K-Means Clustering (Petal Features Only)\"\n)\nplt.show()\nFinal Thoughts\nK-Means is often the\nfirst clustering algorithm\npeople learn, and for good reason. It provides an excellent foundation for understanding:\nUnsupervised learning\nData grouping\nDistance-based algorithms\nIf you understand\nK-Means\n, learning advanced clustering methods becomes much easier.Follow us along in this amazing journey by\nML Diaries by Fahad\n#\nunsupervised-learning\n#\nkmean\n#\nclustering\n#\nai\n#\nmachine-learning\n#\nsupervised-learning\n8\nviews",
