"body_markdown": "A Simple Guide to Logistic Regression with concepts, Workflow & Real-World Use Case\nUpdated\nSeptember 28, 2025\n•\n4\nmin read\n•\nView as Markdown\nM\nMuhammad Fahad Bashir\nMachine Learning, Artificial Intelligence\nPart of series\nSupervise Learning\nIn the\nearly part of our\nSupervised Learning series\n, we introduced what supervised learning is and how it works. Now, in this\nsecond article\n, we’ll explore\nLogistic Regression\n— one of the most common and powerful classification algorithms. The goal is not to dive too deep into math, but to make the concept clear with an example, so anyone—even new learners—can understand how it works.\nWe will also see how to go from a trained model → real-world use case\n.\nWhat is Logistic Regression?\nDespite its name,\nLogistic Regression\nis\nnot used for regression problems\n. Instead, it is a\nclassification algorithm\n.\nIt is mainly used for\nbinary classification\nproblems where the output has only two categories, such as:\nYes / No\nTrue / False\n0 / 1\nPass / Fail\nSmoker / Non-Smoker\nIt can also be extended to handle\nmultinomial\n(more than two classes) and\nordinal\n(ordered categories) problems.\nExample\n: Predicting whether a loan will be approved or not based on income, savings, and credit score.\nWhy Logistic Regression?\nLogistic Regression is popular because it is s\ni\nmple to understand, Fast to train, Interpretable (we can see how each input impacts the result), and flexible for binary and multi-class classification\nThe Core Idea\nThe main purpose of logistic regression is to\nunderstand patterns in input data\nand make predictions about the output.\nIt works by using the\nlogistic (sigmoid) function\n, which maps any number to a probability between\n0 and 1\n.\nσ(x)=11+e−x\\sigma(x) = \\frac{1}{1 + e^{-x}}σ(x)=1+e−x1\nIf probability ≥ threshold (e.g., 0.5) → classify as\n1\n(positive class)\nIf probability < threshold → classify as\n0\n(negative class)\nExample\n:\nImagine predicting if a car will\nbreak down\nbased on the\nyears since its last service\n. Logistic Regression gives a probability (say 0.8). If it’s above 0.5, we classify it as\n“Yes, breakdown likely”\n.\nWorkflow of Logistic Regression\nInput Features\n: Collect predictor variables (e.g., age, salary, credit score).\nApply Weights + Bias\n: Combine them into a linear equation.\nSigmoid Function\n: Convert the result into probability (between 0 and 1).\nThreshold\n: Compare probability with a set threshold (e.g., 0.5).\nOutput\n: Final classification (e.g., loan approved or not).\nCommon Use Cases\nLogistic Regression is widely used across industries:\nFraud Detection\n– detecting fraudulent vs. genuine transactions\nDisease Prediction\n– predicting if a patient has a disease based on symptoms\nCustomer Churn\n– predicting if a customer will leave a service\nSpam Detection\n– classifying emails as spam or not\nPractical Example\nWe normally follow the following steps\nLoad the dataset\nSplit into training and testing sets\nTrain the Logistic Regression model\nMake predictions on the test set\nEvaluate performance (e.g., accuracy)\nIn this example we will show how to use the breast cancer dataset to implement a Logistic Regression model for classification. [\norignal refrence\n]\n# Importing required libraries\nfrom\nsklearn.datasets\nimport\nload_breast_cancer\n# Built-in dataset (Breast Cancer)\nfrom\nsklearn.linear_model\nimport\nLogisticRegression\n# Logistic Regression model\nfrom\nsklearn.model_selection\nimport\ntrain_test_split\n# To split data into training & testing\nfrom\nsklearn.metrics\nimport\naccuracy_score\n# To measure model performance\n# Step 1: Load the dataset (features = X, target labels = y)\nX, y = load_breast_cancer(return_X_y=\nTrue\n)\n# Step 2: Split dataset into training (80%) and testing (20%) sets\nX_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=\n0.20\n, random_state=\n23\n)\n# Step 3: Create a Logistic Regression model\n# max_iter=10000 ensures the model has enough iterations to converge\nclf = LogisticRegression(max_iter=\n10000\n, random_state=\n0\n)\n# Step 4: Train the model using the training data\nclf.fit(X_train, y_train)\n# Step 5: Predict on the test data and calculate accuracy\nacc = accuracy_score(y_test, clf.predict(X_test)) *\n100\n# Step 6: Print the model accuracy in percentage\nprint(\nf\"Logistic Regression model accuracy:\n{acc:\n.2\nf}\n%\"\n)\nWe’ve built and tested our Logistic Regression model in code. But in real life, models are often wrapped inside a\nuser-friendly interface\nso anyone can try them without touching code. For this, we can save our trained model and use\nGradio\n, a Python library that makes it easy to create interactive UIs for machine learning projects. With just a few lines, we can build a simple app where users enter input values and instantly see predictions (e.g., whether a tumor is malignant or benign).\nStep 4: Save the trained model\njoblib.dump(clf, \"logistic_model.pkl\")\nStep 5: Define the prediction function for UI\ndef predict(features): model = joblib.load(\"logistic_model.pkl\") prediction = model.predict([features])[0] return \"Malignant (Cancerous)\" if prediction == 0 else \"Benign (Non-Cancerous)\"\nStep 6: Create Gradio Interface\nConclusion\nLogistic Regression is one of the most\nfoundational algorithms\nin machine learning. It introduces the key idea of mapping inputs to probabilities using the\nsigmoid function\nand helps us make simple yet powerful decisions.\nIn this series, we’ll continue to build upon such concepts, moving from logistic regression to other classification algorithms like Decision Trees, Random Forests, and SVMs.\nStay tuned — each step will connect the dots a little further!\n#\nclassification\n#\nmachine-learning\n#\nsupervised-learning\n#\ntutorial\n24\nviews",
